Sly Toran started doing drywall in 1992 out of Gervais, and incorporated Sly's Drywall Company in 1996. He was 19, working with a couple of guys on small jobs around the valley.
The break came when a few custom home builders gave him a shot. That changed everything. The goal got simple: do the best drywall work, give the best service. That's it.
Where the level 5 work came from
Custom builders don't accept average work. Their clients pay for walls that look right under bright light, in big open rooms with tall windows, in long hallways where one bad seam ruins everything. So Sly's crew learned to do that work. Hand trowel finishes. The smoothest level 5 jobs. The kind of finish where you stop seeing the drywall and just see the room.
Word spread. More custom builders called. The crew grew.
Bringing that quality to multi-family
Then the calls started coming for apartments and condos. Back then, multi-family drywall around Salem and Woodburn wasn't good. Crews moved fast and the finish work suffered. Sly saw the opening. He took the same standards the custom builders wanted and brought them to multi-family jobs.
That's when things really took off. General contractors started asking for Sly's by name because the punch lists were shorter and the units showed better. Thirty-plus years later, the company still runs the same way.
The crew
A handful of the guys from the early days are still on the crew. Sly treats his employees like family, and they've been good to him in return. That kind of loyalty is rare in this trade. You can see it in the work.
Sly's son Sevy runs most of the day-to-day now. He grew up around the crew. The same guys who taught him the trade as a kid work alongside him today. The standards haven't changed. Neither has the way the company treats its people.

The shop sits at 12309 Miller Rd NE in Gervais. From there, the crew runs jobs in Salem, Woodburn, Keizer, Silverton, Mt. Angel, Hubbard, Aurora, Donald, St. Paul, Brooks, Wilsonville, and the towns in between. Custom homes. Production homes. Multi-family. Light commercial. The job changes. The standard doesn't.
